HobbyScool Workshop Quality Guidelines

We value creativity, original thought, and teachers bringing their unique perspectives to their class topics. Your workshop should include narration throughout as you impart your expertise through tips, best practices, frameworks, concepts, theory, and/or examples that are your own. Your personal knowledge, experience, and insight are the most valuable things you have to share!

Workshops should be created specifically for HobbyScool and not include branding, calls-to-action, or references to other teaching platforms within the recorded content.

Teach on an Agreed-Upon Topic

In the HobbyScool membership, we cover a wide array of hobbies and crafts. In the HobbyScool: Monetize Your Craft Membership, we focus on educational topics that help members turn their hobbies into profitable ventures.

While there is ample opportunity to create unique and standout presentations, always get approval for your workshop topic before recording.

Meet Workshop Standards

At HobbyScool, we believe that learning and creativity thrive through active engagement in workshops. Therefore, all workshops should include a clear and engaging project component.

At a minimum, each workshop should feature:

  • Clear instructions detailing what students should do or create during or after the class.
  • Guidelines on what students should upload to the project gallery (if applicable).

Choosing a Workshop Idea

An accessible, relatively quick project can motivate students to practice new skills and share their work.

A top-notch workshop should:

  • Be easy to start: Students are more likely to start and complete a quick, manageable project. Intensive or complex projects are acceptable, but consider breaking them into stages and encouraging feedback.
  • Be relevant: Projects should directly connect to the class topic.
  • Promote independence and creative thinking: Your workshop should help students practice the skills you're teaching in a fun, tangible way, rather than simply following step-by-step instructions. Aim to build a foundation of skills and knowledge so students can apply and experiment with them in their own ways.
  • Encourage engagement: Projects should be shareable. Encourage students to upload their projects to the membership and comment on each other's work.

Include Well-Organized Content

Great instruction requires a solid structure based on a lesson plan or course outline. At a minimum:

  • Each workshop should have a clear title that reflects the content. We can help you come up with a engaging title for your workshop
  • Each workshop should have a clear path for the students to follow and include a list of required supplies (if applicable)

Meet Standards for Audio & Video Quality

High-quality audio and video ensure that students can stay focused on learning. Keep in mind:

  • Audio must be clear and easy to understand, free of distracting background noises.
  • Audio should sync with the video footage and be clear from both channels.
  • Video must be high resolution (1080p) and shot with a steady camera, clear lighting, and proper framing.
  • Video should be filmed in a 16:9 aspect ratio (horizontal) for slides and video.
  • Screencasts, images, and text must be sharp, not blurry or pixelated.
  • Narration, commentary, and/or voiceovers should be natural and clear without using computer-generated voices.

Best Practice: Vary Visual Presentation

It is a best practice to include a variety of visuals and/or visual formats, such as on-screen text, slides, or example images, to emphasize key takeaways or explain complex ideas. Switching up camera angles can also break up static shots and keep students engaged.

Additionally:

  • Talking head shots need to be well-lit with professional backdrops.
  • Slides need to be well-structured and visually appealing.
  • Avoid rambling, excessive pauses, or filler words like "um."

Grow Your Audience

Teaching on HobbyScool is a great way to grow your brand and build your audience.

Within your workshop, marketing of your brand should be limited so students can focus on learning. Self-promotion should only occur within your introduction (e.g. Hi, I’m Andrea from ABC Quilting) and conclusion (e.g. Thank you for joining me today. To connect with me go to www.website.com or www.instagram.com, or sign up for my free gift on my website).

In our membership, we will link to your website and one social media account for the members to connect with you.

You also have an optional opportunity to lead a challenge in our growing Skool community for extra visibility and exposure.

We will promote your workshop to our entire email list to encourage them to sign up for the Craft & Create Club membership.
